2017 Honda Pilot Towing Capacities

The 2017 Honda Pilots had a decent towing capacity attached to them and were actually more capable than I would have guessed. The overall trailer weight ratings did vary quite a bit though, so you do you need to know why they varied and make sure you have the required equipment that you need in order to pull the weight.

This article is a combination of all the research I did that I gathered online from the owner's manual and the online brochure that came directly from Honda. I hope it helps somebody out there and answers any questions you might have.

Be sure to read through your owner's manual to get familiar with your SUV and to make sure you follow all of Honda's recommendations when it comes to anything regarding your vehicle.

2017 Pilot Overview

Overall Towing Capacity: The overall towing capacity for the 2017 Honda Pilots ranged from 0-5,000 lbs. And came down to how many occupants you had in the vehicle, whether you had a two-wheel drive or all-wheel drive model and to achieve the highest ratings you also had to have the ATF cooler installed.

It is important to note that if you had eight occupants in the vehicle, Honda did not recommend pulling a trailer due to the high weight in the vehicle, which takes away from your gross combined weight rating.

Engine Options: There were not many engine options for these model year SUVs, in fact, there was only one single engine that was available and is probably why the charts were so simple. All models, regardless of trim or drivetrain configuration had a 3.5 L engine equipped, which was also in a V6 configuration.

Trim Levels: You had five different choices between trim level options for this model year, which I verified in the brochure and these were listed in that brochure as the: LX, EX, EX-L, Touring and Elite trim levels. The trim level you had did not affect your maximum trailer weight ratings at all and had nothing to do with the figures listed in the chart.

Assumed Weight: There is always an assumed weight that manufacturers use when stating maximum trailer weight ratings. Since Honda lays out their charts a bit differently from other manufacturers, this information is not as important because the data is directly tied to the number of occupants in the vehicle.

It is important to note that Honda considers each occupant 150 lbs. in weight and takes into consideration that they might have cargo, so they allow an additional 15 lbs. for any cargo that each occupant might have, giving us a total of 165 lbs. per occupant.

The Tow Chart:

The 2017 Honda Pilot charts look a lot like many of the other late model years and is in fact very similar, if we compare the stats. Honda usually likes to list the number of occupants in the vehicle and then an associated maximum trailer weight rating with that figure.

You can also see three different rows with different specs listed for all-wheel drive models with and ATF cooler, all-wheel-drive models without the ATF cooler and two-wheel drive models.

The all-wheel-drive models that had the ATF cooler installed had the highest trailer weight ratings in the chart. Notice how Honda states that towing is not recommended if you have eight occupants in the vehicle.

Tongue Weight Rating:

The maximum tongue weight ratings were also specified in the owner's manual and came in the form of a chart, that I have posted as a screenshot image below. Honda recommends that 5 to 15% of your total trailer's weight should account for the tongue weight rating if you are hauling a boat trailer and they specify a higher 10-15% limit for all other types of trailers.

I do want to point out that the columns in the chart give a 10% maximum tongue weight rating, but this just seems to be an example and the numbers are easier to break down using 10% as an example.

Trailer Brakes:

If Your trailer weighs 1,000 pounds or more, Honda requires the use of trailer brakes, which are independent of your vehicle's braking system. You will want to check with your local law enforcement agency to see if the 1,000 pound rating complies with their standards.

Trim Levels:

There we're five different trim levels offered for the 2017 Honda Pilots, which I was able to find listed in the brochure and these were labeled as the: LX, EX, EX-L, Touring and Elite trim levels. Now, these trim levels did not have anything to do with your maximum trailer weight ratings that were specified in the chart, like some people assume.

There were only three factors that really made a difference when it came to the trailer weight ratings and this was the number of people in the vehicle, whether you had a two-wheel drive or all-wheel drive model and to achieve the highest ratings, you also had to have the ATF cooler installed.

GVWR, GCWR and GAWR Figures:

The gross combined weight ratings, gross vehicle weight ratings and the gross axle weight ratings were also listed in the owner's manual in a convenient chart, like all the other information and made it very easy to find these very important metrics that you may needif you need to calculate more complex loading scenarios.

GAWRs: The gross axle weight ratings were listed separately but if we look at the chart below, we can see that the two-wheel drive models had a front axle weight rating of 2,734 lbs., while the all-wheel-drive models came in at 2,855 lbs. For the rear axle, we had a weight rating of 2,921 lbs. for the two-wheel drive models and 3,097 lbs. for the all-wheel-drive models.

Transmission Cooler Side Note:

There what's an option in the charts that had in ATF cooler listed and you had to have this installed on your vehicle in order to achieve the highest ratings in the chart. Now the ATF cooler was only four all-wheel-drive models and did not come as an option for the two-wheel drive models.

Identifying whether you have one of these coolers installed on your vehicle is a little bit harder for the average person, you are going to have to be mechanically inclined and familiar with automotive parts in order to notice one of these, I think. You could get under the vehicle and look to see if you see two transmission lines that go to the radiator or to an auxiliary cooler somewhere around the radiator.

If you are not mechanically inclined or are just not confident that you can verify that you have one of these coolers installed, you could always take it into a dealership to see if they can verify for you.

Other Notes I Found:

There were a couple of other little bits of information I found in the owner's manual that talks about other important information, but it is usually not as sought after as the trailer weight ratings are.

I posted screenshots of what I found below and if you look at the first screenshot, Honda recommends a 55 mile an hour speed limit for fixed-sided trailers, like an enclosed camp trailer.

There's also a little section in the manual that talks about weight distribution hitches, that I also posted a screenshot of and that the towing performance of your vehicle, or any vehicle for that matter, and how it can be affected by certain elements like higher outside temperatures, steep uphill grades and higher altitudes.

Helpful Links:

The two main resources I used to gather information for this article were the owner's manual and the 2017 brochure, both of which I found online.

Now the owner's manual came directly from Honda's official website, but I was not able to find the brochure there, so I had to use another source, but it seems to be the original document from the dealer back in 2017.
