2000-2020 Honda CRV Towing Capacities (With Charts)

The towing capacity for the Honda CR-V's was really pretty simple to figure out and was the same for the majority of the years with a slight variation for 2000 & 2001 models. Other variations that you need to be aware of were in the gross vehicle weight ratings and the gross combined weight ratings.

Overview of the Data For the Honda CR-V's:

Variations: Out of all of the models from 2000-2020, there were no variations as far as engine configurations or 2WD/AWD that impacted the tow capacity figures for the CR-V's like I usually see  sometimes for other vehicles.

The only variations I really noticed were in the gross vehicle weight ratings and gross combined weight ratings for certain years.

Towing Capacity: From 2000-2020 the towing capacity was set at either 1,500 lbs. or 1,000 lbs., depending on the model year. 2000, 2001 and 2002 models had the 1,000 lb capacity and the 2003 and later models had the 1,500 lb capacity.

It is worth mentioning that Honda recommends using trailer brakes for any trailers that have a weight of 1,000 pounds or more. This would apply to most models, seeing as how the majority of the specs were set at about 1,500 lbs. maximum.

2002-2020 Models:

From 2002-2020, the CR-V had a towing capacity rating of 1,500 lb throughout all of the model years, making the data really easy to read and figure out without too many confusing metrics getting in the way.

For the most part, most of the gross vehicle weight ratings and gross combined weight ratings for the Honda CR-Vs made from 2002-2020 stayed the same but there were slight variations in a couple of different model years that you will need to take into account.

For instance, Honda CR-V's made from 2003-2004 had slightly lower weight ratings than the 2017-2020 models and the same was true for 2005-2011 models and for 2012-2016 models as well, which I have provided the data for below.

2000 & 2001 Models:

CR-V’s made in 2000 and 2001 had A lower towing capacity rating of just 1,000 lbs., compared to the 1,500 pounds that we saw in the later model years.

With that being said, we also saw a lower gross vehicle weight rating number, along with lower gross combined weight rating numbers as well.

The two charts below reflect this and give you an example of what was in the 2000 and 2001 owner's manuals that I referenced.

Where I Gathered My Info:

I got all of my information for the Honda CRVs from the owner's manuals for the specific years that I went ahead and linked to below. There is other useful information in these manuals about towing that I think people would find interesting and definitely worth a read, especially if you've never done any sort of haulingwith your CR-V before.
